2022 in Review: Major Accomplishments

The year 2022 was an extremely difficult period as we were transitioning from a two-year-long period marred by COVID-19 restrictions. That being said, we have some success stories.

Research Students

A significant amount of work in the lab is performed by students---both research assistants and postgraduate research students---and as such, we constantly recruit talented students. Correspondingly, we have senior students graduate every year.

Google Research Award to Explore Use of Artificial Intelligence and Enterprise Medical Imaging for Effective Radiological Workflows in Zambia

Google Research has awarded us a very generous research grant, as part of their Award for Inclusion Research (AIR) Program [1]. The grant has been awarded to support our research project titled “Exploring the Use of Enterprise Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence for Efficient and Effective Radiological Workflows in Public Health Facilities in Zambia”.

Lighton Phiri Appointed Member of the Board of Directors for The Networked Digital Libraries of Theses and Dissertations

Lighton Phiri has been appointed to serve a two (2) year term, from January 2022 until December 2023, as a member of the Board of Directors [1] for Networked Digital Library Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) [2]. The Board of Directors draws memberships from academics and professionals from around the world and is currently chaired by Prof.

Conference Presentation at CSEDU 2022: Factors Influencing Co-Creation of Open Educational Resources Using Learning Object Repositories

Improved Discoverability of Digital Objects in Institutional RepositoriesLighton gave a talk at the 14th International Conference on Computer Supported Education (CSEDU 2022) conference that was held virtually between April 22–24, 2022, due to the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

"Enterprise Medical Imaging in the Global South: Challenges and Opportunities" Accepted to IST-Africa 2022

Our submission to IST-Africa 2022, titled "Enterprise Medical Imaging in the Global South: Challenges and Opportunities" has been accepted and will be presented during the upcoming IST-Africa 2022 conference. We have collaborated with colleagues from the University Teaching Hospitals (UTHs)'s Adult Hospital in order to explore the potential of using Enterprise Medical Imaging to address some of the grand challenges affecting radiological diagnosis.

"Factors Influencing Co-Creation of Open Education Resources Using Learning Object Repositories" Accepted to CSEDU 2022

Our submission to the 14th International Conference on Computer Supported Education (CSEDU 2022), titled "Factors Influencing Co-Creation of Open Education Resources Using Learning Object Repositories" has been accepted and will be presented during the upcoming CSEDU 2022 conference. The paper, in part, based on research conducted as part of a capstone project report, outlines a study conducted in order to investigate the use of Learning Object Repositories (LORs) in co-creation of OERs by educators.

Seed Money Grant Award for Streamlined Medical Imaging Workflows in Zambia Using Enterprise Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence

We are amongst the 12 successful applicants that have been awarded a "Seed Money" grant, amounting to ZMW 25,000.00, by the Directorate of Research and Graduate Studies (DRGS) at The University of Zambia (UNZA). We have partnered with Radiologists at The University Teaching Hospitals (UTHs) to explore how Enterprise Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to streamline medical imaging workflows.
