Road Safety in the Republic of Zambia

Road traffic accidents in the Republic of Zambia affect the well-being of the general population and are also a burden on the economy. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) investment case reports that road traffic accidents cost the Zambian economy ZMW 16.7 billion annually, a figure which accounts for 4.7% of Zambia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (United Nations Development Programme, 2023). The report further indicates that 2, 100 Zambians died as a result of road traffic accidents in 2021 alone. The Road Traffic Act of 2002 (National Assembly of Zambia, 2002) provides legislation which, in part, resulted in the establishment the Road Transport and Safety Agency---an entity responsible for implementing road safety interventions aimed at prevent road traffic accidents. This probject is focuses on technological interventions aimed at improving road safety in the Republic of Zambia.
