The DataLab Research Group has received an African Artificial Intelligence Research Award (AAIRA) from Data Science Africa (DSA), in the 2022 round of the awards. The award, worth $12,500, supports the project Automatic Classification of Radiological Medical Images for Efficient and Effective Radiological Workflows in Public Health Facilities.
The project builds on the group's Enterprise Medical Imaging in Zambia work, which was earlier supported by a University of Zambia Seed Money Grant (2021) and a Google Research Award for Inclusion Research (2022). The DSA award funds postgraduate student research, starting with MSc student Malaizyo Muzumala, who joined the group in July 2023 to work on it, on the use of artificial intelligence to support the interpretation of medical images in Zambian public health facilities.
