Zambian Sign Language Translation

Zambian Sign Language Translation

Zambian Sign Language (ZSL) is recognised as one of Zambia's official languages, yet there are fewer than ten formally qualified sign language interpreters in the country. This project investigates the use of computer vision, deep learning and natural language processing to build real-time, bidirectional translation between Zambian Sign Language and spoken English.

The current work focuses on inclusive parliamentary participation: recognising ZSL gestures and converting them to synthesised speech, and converting speech from hearing members of parliament into sign language rendered by an animated avatar. The project works with the National Assembly of Zambia.
